Experimental cinema represents the most radical means of expression within motion-picture based visual culture at an international level.
In recent years many film festivals, conferences, journals, digital archives, workshops, community labs and filmclubs targeting experimental cinema have skyrocketed in popularity, which are now constituting a network of international strongholds and distribution centres. Despite the international tendency, experimental filmmaking in Hungary is practically non-existent. It’s severly underrepresented status marks the biggest gap in contemporary Hungarian visual culture. The experimental film heroes and heroines of the former Balázs Béla Studio or the Kőbánya Amateur Film Studio are gradually being forgotten, and with them a genre that was internationally renowned in Hungary is disappearing. Apart from the artistic cactivities of a few isolated directors, underfunded or completely independent underground filmmaking groups, marginalised garage-publishers and a handful of academic researchers, experimental filmmaking currently has no discourse nor platforms in Hungary.
Celluloidra Revolverrel aims to organise Hungarian experimental cinema.
